The biotech industry comprises companies whose products benefit humans by treating illnesses with life-saving medicines and therapies, improving agricultural yields and generating eco-friendly chemicals and fuels. Bioinformatics is another area as the study of biological processes and data. It can be applied in many different industries.

Biotech has its roots in the 1970s when recombinant-DNA technology (genetic engineering) was developed and patent. This technique lets scientists splice genes in production cells which will then begin to produce useful protein molecules.

Biotechnology is heavily used in the target-discovery programs of most pharmaceutical companies today. Smaller companies are also in the pharmaceutical industry that utilize proprietary techniques to develop new therapeutic drugs.

Companies that focus on agrobiology, cosmetics, environmental and food technologies nutraceuticals, industrial biotechnology, along with veterinary medicine, are also achieving goals within the industry pursuing other biotechnology applications. Fully integrated Pharma companies are massive, commercial enterprises that research and manufacture generic or brand-name drugs.

Biotech is experiencing a revolution because of the advancement of technologies. Companies can now validate their systems for conditions that have well-understood mechanisms, like sickle cell anemia, and can reach greater patient populations. Some companies are trying to come up with new therapies for diseases that have not been treated, like Duchenne muscle dystrophy.
